Here is the post for students to sign up for classes for the term. As usual, the day and time of each class is listed with the class and it is up to the students to set their own schedules, like with a university course catalog.

ONE: Comment logged in as the pup taking classes.

TWO: Put the pup's FULL name in the SUBJECT LINE of the comment.

THREE: In the body of the comment, put a LIST of the course titles, in the order they appear below (PLEASE make sure to do this part!). PLEASE DO NOT GROUP CLASSES BY DAYS. You can c&p the entire line for that specific class, if you want, but all I really need is the title of the course. DO NOT PUT ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION IN YOUR COMMENT OTHER THAN THIS, UNLESS YOU HAVE A QUESTION.

Related to this, since I do not turn off comment notifs in order to keep track of signups and keep an eye out for questions, I am going to request that if you would like to discuss/plot/etc about the school that you please DO NOT do it in this post. My inbox thanks you.

Under the cut is the schedule of classes for the school. The ones in red need a teacher. Please comment if you have a pup who would be interested in teaching any of these classes. There's a LOT of red this time, folks, the school needs as much help as they can get.

Important note: The school will not be adding any new classes at this time to the course catalog. If you have an idea for a class that is not at all covered by or similar to anything listed below, let me know and we can discuss. If you told me previously about a new class you want your pup to teach this term and I okayed it at that time, go ahead and comment below with it and just add a note to that effect.

Preschool - Term Eight

Alongside the school's eighth term, Polly will be setting up the preschool again, making herself available 9:30 to 11:30 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for anybody who'd like to sign up their pre-school children, and any children present who might like to participate.

All pre-school kids are welcome, as are parents or other adults welcome in the Children's Office who'd like to volunteer to help.

As with last term (and assuming no objections), the Preschool will be rolled in with the Children's Office. Polly will make herself available Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 9:30-11 to do preschooly things at the Children's Office for any children who sign up, and any others who happen to be present.

So, if your mun has a child coming into preschool age, sign her up!

Term Six - Preschool

Unless anyone objects, Polly would like to suggest rolling in the Preschool with the Children's Office. Basically, Polly will make herself available Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 9:30-11 (the old Preschool hours) to do preschooly things at the Children's Office for any children who happen to be present.

She still has to check with Charlie Jones about what times she'll be available, what with the coming baby.

If your mun has a child coming into preschool age, sign her up! Polly will keep the information available for the next term, when the Preschool might become more formalized again.

Term Five Sign-Ups - STUDENTS

TERM FIVE: Preschool

Polly O'Keefe and Charlie Jones will be running the preschool again this term, following the same dates as the Island School's fifth term. The preschool will be held Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The preschool is for children age 3 to 5, although children aged 2 years, six months or younger can be accepted on a case-by-case basis.

Last term, we only had one student: young Sam Vimes, and the way we handled that was saying that each day, we'd head down to the Children's Office and let Sam join in to play with the kids there, in a "supervisory" role. Hopefully, we'll have more kids around this term, although we'll probably still be paying a visit to the Children's Office for play time.

Starting with this term, the classes and schedule is going to remain the same, and just the teachers will be updated each term before students sign up. Under the cut is the class schedule from last term. Classes with teachers that have since disappeared are in red (poke me if I missed any or made someone red who's still on the island); please let me know if you would be interested in teaching any of them. Enrollment is open to anyone, but assumes a secondary school level of knowledge. Completion of a Sociology 1/Introduction to Sociology course (On the island or elsewhere) is recommended but not required.

Lacking an office, Nate will be available for questions in the Compound rec room Wednesday and Saturday evenings from 5-8 PM. Private tutoring is available upon request. A copy of this syllabus is permanently posted in the classroom.

Attendance Policy: Attendance will not be taken, but students are expected to attend all classes to receive the full benefit of the course. Additionally, please try to keep up with the required reading as we go so that you may substantively contribute to in-class discussions and debates, which are critical to successful completion of the class.

Course Description: Daily news reports direct much of our attention to social problems such as crime, inequality, and poverty. Yet rarely are these reports accompanied by a discussion of the systematic causes of these problems. More often we become witness to an endless stream of media coverage reporting seemingly isolated incidents and events, in a sensationalized manner. Seldom are we informed of the process by which some events or behaviors come to be defined as social problems, or the decision-making process by which some social problems are selected for coverage, while others are ignored. The purpose of this course is to subject a selection of social problems, as well as the coverage of those problems, to a sociological analysis. We will attempt to answer questions such as, “How does a social problem become defined as such?” “What are the causes of various social problems?” Throughout the course we will explore solutions to these social problems and ask, “What can be done?” directing some of our attention to those organizations, individuals, programs and policies that have implemented constructive responses to issues of public concern.

Term Four Sign-Ups: PRESCHOOL STUDENTS

Okay, so Elissa suggested I take the bull by the horns here and pull together a sign-up sheet for parents wishing to sign their students up for pre-school. Charlie Andrews and Polyhymnia O'Keefe are in charge, sharing duties, including setting up and cleaning up the classroom, arranging activities and giving the kids a playful but hopefully somewhat educational experience. Polly wants this to point the way towards the formal classes of the school, easing the transition for the young minds.

This is separate from the activities of the Children's Office, though Polly and Charlie are both involved in that as well, and probably borrow supplies for the classes.

Pre-school classes run Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 9-11 a.m and are available to all children ages 3-5 (with younger children accepted on a case-by-case basis, but truthfully I suspect we'll be rather flexible). Parents of said children are encouraged to sign their kids up if they are interested, and if any parent wants to volunteer to help out in the classroom, you are most welcome, and are encouraged to note that in your application in the comments.

The term starts Monday, February 9 and will follow the same schedule as the Island School.
